President, Aonla grower’s Association, Salem, Tamil Nadu Mr. Mehta, born on 6th September, 1943 is a resident of Salem, Tamil Nadu. He is managing Family’s plantations of coffee, pepper, orange, pumello, hill bananas, jack fruit, litchi, avocado and other fruits since 1963. He established “The Nursery” now recognized by Horticulture Dept. of States & Central Government as an approved source of fruits and other crop genuine plant material source. He has popularized commercial cultivation of Arid Zone fruits like tamarind, amla, bael, cordia, etc. over South India.
He is producing scientifically budded plants of mandarin orange, sweet orange, pomello, acid lime, seedless lime, medica, seveille, fortunella, kumquatmquot, etc. on Rangpur lime rootstock. Over the years more than six lakh plants of various citrus varieties have been supplied to growers in Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala & Rajasthan. Introduced “Madhukar banana” a variety of Giant Cavendish with a potential to yield a 90 kg bunch in light soil with assured irrigation. He is recipient of Rishi Chaman Award for Amla, Nalla Valai Award for Banana, Lt. Amit Singh Memorial Foundation Award and Best Pinery Award for 3 years in Coorg. He was the Director of National Horticulture Board upto 5th September 2010. The first electric drier for cardamom was introduced with the help of CFTRI, Mysore and CSIRO
of Australia.
