Progressive Farmer, Apple Orchard, Himachal Pradesh Born on April 5, 1958, Mr. Ram Lal Chauhan is an innovative and progressive apple orchardist, who introduced apple, pear and stone fruits in the region and promoted among the orchardists. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Punjab University, Chandigarh, Punjab Contribution of Mr. Chauhan in horticulture development is exemplary. Innovations in the area of combinations of rootstocks and spur type apple varieties as well as orchard management techniques for better quality fruits is praise worthy. Mr. Chauhan’s achievements includes conversion of old apple trees to internationally accepted high yielding conditions, obtaining highest productivity level of 56 tonnes per ha from standard apple orchard. He has organized tours of apple orchardists to interact about the technologies used by the apple growers and to learn advance nursery techniques adopted in USA, UK, France, China and Holland. He has shared the advance technologies with fellow farmers in all apples growing states of the country and large numbers of orchardist were benefited. The efforts of Sh. Chauhan in the dissemination of advance technologies of temperate fruit production was well appreciated and he was awarded Progressive Farmer Award by ICAR-IARI, New Delhi in 2008; Utkrisht Krishak Puraskar by Honorable Chief Minister, Punjab Govt. in 2010; L.M. Patel Farmer Award by Dr M.S. Swaminathan in 2010; Innovative Farmer Award by ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru in 2011; Jamest Ji Tata National Virtual Academy Fellowship in 2012 and Utkrisht Krishak Samman presented by Honorable Chief Minister, Govt. of Gujarat in 2013. In addition, Mr. Chauhan has also received 132 state level awards in different apple shows organized at regional level.
