Dr Sham Singh

Born at village Ayali Kalan in Ludhiana District of Punjab on July 5, 1904, Dr Sham Singh graduated from the Punjab Agricultural College, Layallpur (now Faislabad in Pakistan). He did Ph.D. from the University of Bristol, England in 1936.

Dr Singh Joined Punjab Agricultural College and Research Institute, Lyallpur in 1927 as Research Assistant and became Assistant Horticulturist in 1936. He served at Assistant Agricultural Production Adviser to the Government of India, New Delhi in 1944 and afterwards served in various capacities, e.g., Deputy Fruit Development Adviser (1948-50), Assistant Agricultural Commissioner in ICAR (1950-56) and finally Deputy Agricultural Commissioner (1956-61) in ICAR.

Dr Sham Singh did commendable work in the field of horticulture particularly on citrus rootstocks and grape hybridization. He earned several awards for his outstanding contribution to horticultural research. He also contributed in making India self-sufficient in the production of vegetable seeds. He was associated with several important committees of the state and central governments as well as professional horticultural societies in country.

During his professional career, Dr Singh published about one hundred research and popular articles and also is the author of a very popular book ‘The Mango’. He also guided several post graduate students, some of whom occupied distinguished positions in the country.
Dr Singh breathed his last on 4th February, 1981.
