Fomer Governor of Madhya Pradesh and Union Minister of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt of India Dr. Balram Jakhar born and brought up in a farming family of Panjab, graduated from the Foreman Christian College, Lahore with Honors in Sanskrit. Essentially an agriculturist and more particularly an orchardist, Jakhar’s services in the field of fruit-growing received national recognition when he was awarded the title ‘All India Udyan Pandit’ by the President of India in 1975. He was elected President of the Punjab Cooperative Grape Growers’, Federation and the President of the Farmer’s Forum of the State. He was awarded honorary degrees of Doctor of Science and ‘Vidya Martand’ respectively, by the HAU, Hisar and the GKVV, Hardwar. As the Union Minister of Agriculture, Dr Jakhar played a significant role in promoting horticulture programmes through enhanced budgetary support. Currently, Governor of Madhya Pradesh, he has held coveted positions of speaker of Lok Sabha, Deputy Minister of Cooperation, Irrigation and Power in Punjab
