Foundation Day Lecture

The Horticultural Society of India started Foundation Day Lecture series to be held on its foundation day preferably on 6-7th November every year. Eminent Agri/ Horti Scientists were invited to give such lecture. The Foundation Day Lecture were delivered by many eminent scientists such as Dr M.S. Swaminathan, Dr J.S. Samra, Dr C.D. Mayee, Dr A.K. Gulati, and Dr Haseeb A. Drabu, Mr. S.K. Pattanayak and Dr V. Prakash as detaited below:

2009
The Foundation Day Lecture was delivered by Dr J.S. Samra, CEO, National Rainfed Areas Authority, Govt. of India at the Virology Auditorium, Division of Plant

Pathology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi on 26th December, 2009. The event was presided by Dr C.D. Mayee, Chairman, Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, New Delhi. Dr H.S. Gupta, Director, IARI, New Delhi was the Special Guest.

2012
The Foundation Day Lecture was delivered by Dr Ashok Gulati, Chairman for Commission of Agriculture Costs and Prices, Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi on the topic “From Plate to Plough: Building Efficient and Inclusive Supply Chains in Horticulture” in the Dr B.P. Pal Auditorium of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana on 6th November, 2012. The Session was Chaired by Dr S.S. Johl, Chancellor, PCU, Bhatinda.

2013 Dr C.D. Mayee, Former Chairman, ASRB and Adjunct Professor, IARI New Delhi delivered the foundation day lecture on Production of Safe Horticulture Produce on 6th November, 2013 at Dr BP Pal Auditorium, IARI, New Delhi. Mr. Ashish Bahuguna, Secretary (Agriculture & Co-operation), Ministry of Agriculture, Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi chaired the lecture.

2014
During the Pre-Inaugural session of the Horticulture Congress, Prof. M.S. Swaminathan delivered the HSI Foundation Day Lecture entitled ‘Horticulture for meeting Zero Hunger Challenge’ chaired by Mr. Ashish Bahuguna, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India. The lecture at the CODISSIA complex, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Prof. Swaminathan stressed the need for a shift from food security to nutritional security in the country. He suggested that it could be attained by a mix of agriculture and horticulture. He stressed that the current challenges facing agriculture are improving productivity, better nutrition, preventing food

losses, mitigating losses due to climate change, minimizing market volatility and efficient natural resource management.

2015
During the Inauguration day of the conference, Jenab Dr Haseeb Drabhu,
Honorable Finance Minister, J&K delivered Foundation Day Lecture on “Role of temperate Fruits production in the Economy of Hilly Regions of India” on 6th November, 2015 at Sher-e-Kashimr International Convention Centre, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. The lecture was chaired by Dr K.L. Chadha, President, HSI.

Dr V. Prakash, former Director, CFTRI, Mysuru delivered the HSI Foundation Day address on 15th November, 2016. The lecture was chaired by Dr R.B. Singh, Chancellor CAU, Imphal and former president, NAAS and Chairman, ASRB, New Delhi.
