National Seminars/Symposia

The Celebration of Golden Jubilee of the Society started from 1991 by conducting series of seminars/ symposia. Five national symposia were organized during 19911992 on different fruits at different research centers in the country under the guidance of Dr K.L. Chadha, Deputy Director General (Horticulture), ICAR and President, HSI. The crops covered during the symposium included banana, litchi, papaya and sapota among tropical and sub-tropical fruits, besides one devoted to temperate fruits. All these symposia were attended by a large number of scientists and growers. The details of these symposia are given below :
i. National Symposium on Optimisation of Productivity and Utilization of Sapota at GAU, Navsari, Gujarat (October 8, 1991).
ii. National Symposium of Production and Utilization of Papaya at TNAU, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu (March 6-7, 1992).
iii. National Symposium on Litchi at RAU, Pusa, Bihar (May 30-31, 1992).
iv. National Symposium on Temperate Fruits at YSPUHF, Solan, Himachal Pradesh (September 4-5, 1992).
v. National Symposium on Banana at MPKV, Pune, Maharashtra (September 2223, 1992).

vii. Golden Jubilee Symposium on Horticulture Research – Changing Scenario, May 24-28th, 1993, Bangalore

The Golden Jubilee Symposium on Horticulture Research- Changing Scenario was organized from May 24-28, 1993 at Hotel Ashok, Bangalore in celebrations of 50 years of dedicated service by the Horticultural Society of India to the cause of horticultural research and development. The symposium was inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Agriculture Minister, Dr Balram Jakhar and many eminent and veteran leaders were present on the occasion including Mr. S.M. Krishna then the Chief Minister of
Karnataka. A total of 1,500 abstracts were received by the Society for Symposium. The Symposium was divided into 28 Technical sessions, which were Chaired by eminent horticulturists. A total of 36 lead, 548 oral and 361 poster papers were presented during the symposium. Concurrent sessions were held in three different halls. Five memorial lectures in the memory of Late Dr K.C. Nair, Dr G.S. Randhawa, Mr. S.L. Katyal, Dr Harbhajan Singh and Dr R.N. Singh were delivered by stalwarts and a book on Memorial and Special lectures was also compiled and edited by Dr K.L. Chadha.

viii. National Symposium on Horticulture Biotechnology, October 2830th, 1996, Bangalore
A National Symposium on Horticultural Biotechnology was organized from 28-30 October, 1996 at Bangalore in collaboration with GKVK, Bengaluru and Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. The Symposium was inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture Dr Balram Jakhar. In this symposium, 31 lead papers and 186 poster papers were presented during 9 technical sessions. The Organizing Committee of the Symposium was chaired by Dr K.L. Chadha, DDG (Hort.), while Dr I.S. Yadav, Director, IIHR was the Organizing Secretary.

ix. National Seminar on New Horizons in Production and Post Harvest Management of Tropical and Subtropical Fruits, 8-9th December, 1998, IARI-NRL Auditorium, New Delhi
The National Seminar on New Horizons in Production and Postharvest
Management of Tropical and Subtropical Fruits was held on 8-9 December, 1998 at IARINuclear Research Laboratory Auditorium, New Delhi. The Seminar was inaugured by Dr K.L. Chadha, National Professor (Hort.) and President of the Horticultural Society of India, New Delhi. Dr H.K. Jain, Former Director, IARI, Dr Manmohan Attavar, MD, Indo Amirican Hybrid Seeds, Dr Kirti Singh, Chairman ASRB, Dr S.P. Ghosh, DDG (Hort.), Dr R.B. Singh, Director, IARI, Dr R.N. Pal, ADG (Hort.) and other distinguished

guests were present during the Inaugural Session. On second day, Dr R.S. Paroda, Secretary DARE and Director General, ICAR and Dr V.L. Chopra, Former Secretary DARE and Director General, ICAR graced the occasion and gave words of wisdom. The deliberations were divided in 14 areas, 19 lead papers and 13 poster papers were presented in 4 sessions. The proceedings of the seminar was edited by Dr Room Singh and published as Special Issue of Indian Journal of Horticulture Vol 58(1&2) in 2001.

x. National Seminar on Hi-tech Horticulture, June 26-28th, 2000, IIHR, Bangalore
The National Seminar on Hi-tech Horticulture was organized by Dr K.L. Chadha, National Professor (Hort.), ICAR under the aegis of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences in collaboration with the Horticultural Society of India and Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru during 26-28 June, 2000. It was attended by 500 participants from across the faculties and universities in the country. Dr M.S. Swaminathan was Chief Guest of the seminar. The seminar was divided in

eight themes covering germplasm identification, conservation, enhancement and exchange, hi-tech propagation, Hi-tech production, protected cultivation, hi-tech crop protection, new development in post-harvest management, logistics and policies besides special theme areas. Proceedings of the seminar titled ‘Hi-tech Horticulture’ were edited by Drs K.L. Chadha, M.L. Choudhary and K.V. Prasad covering 454 pages and published by the society during 2001. A policy paper was also published by the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi.

xi. National Conference on Organic Farming for Sustainable Production, 23-25th March, 2014, NASC Complex, Todapur, New Delhi
A National Conference on Organic Farming for sustainable Production was organised by the Society as a result of the initiative of ICAR particularly, Dr Mangala Rai, Secretary, DARE and ICAR, who identified Organic Farming as one of the 30 priority areas for re-orienting research programme of the ICAR. The conference was held from March 23-25, 2014 at NASC Complex, New Delhi in collaboration with ICAR and Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, Lucknow. The conference aimed to review, discuss and bring out future line of action on various facets of Organic Agriculture. Dr R.K. Pathak was Organising Secretary of the Conference, while the Souvenir was edited by Drs S.K. Singh, Umesh Srivastava, V.B. Patel and R.A. Ram.

xii. National Conference on Temperate Fruits & Nuts- A Way Forward for Enhancing Productivity and Quality, November 6-9th, 2015; ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir

The Horticultural Society of India, New Delhi in association with ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture organized the National Conference on Temperate Fruits & Nuts: A way Forward for Enhancing Productively and Quality from 6-9th November, 2015 at ICAR-CITH, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir state under the Chairmanship of Dr K.L. Chadha, President, HSI. The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Janab Abdul Rehman Veeri, Minister for Horticulture and Haj Wuqaf, J&K, and was presided by Jenab Syed M.A. Bukhari, Minister for Public Works, Floriculture, Parks & Garden, J&K. The National Conference covered 8 Technical Sessions. These sessions were chaired by eminent horticulturists, namely, Dr Brahma Singh, Former Director, DRDO; Dr Nazeer Ahmed, Vice Chancellor, SKUAS&T, Srinagar; Dr S.D. Shikhamany, Former Vice Chancellor, Dr YSRUHS, West Godavari (AP); Dr V.S. Thakur, Vice Chancellor, YS PUH&F, Solan; Dr N.K. Krishna Kumar, DDG (Hort. Sci.), ICAR, New Delhi; Dr A.A. Sofi, Ex-Director, CITH, Srinagar and Dr A.R. Trag, Vice Chancellor, IUST, Srinagar, besides Dr K.L. Chadha, President, the Horticultural Society of India. There were 31 theme-based papers of which 26 were presented and discussed. Besides oral presentations, there were four Poster Sessions covering 8 major theme areas of the conference. Over 150 posters were displayed by the delegates out of the 239 accepted from over 300 submitted initially. The proceedings of the conference titled ‘ Temperate Fruits and Nuts’ was edited by Drs K.L. Chadha, Nazeer Ahmed, S.K. Singh and Pritam Kalia covering 551 pages was published by M/s Astral Publishing House, New Delhi.
